There is a crisis along the Mexico – United States border.  It is a humanitarian crisis.  It is an economic crisis.  It is a national security crisis.  But rather than focus on what is required to solve the many complex problems facing our nation along the southwestern border, the liberal media has instead taken up the sophomoric squabble started by their favorite socialist – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. 

Last week Ocasio-Cortez posted a video on Instagram in which she said, “The United States in running concentration camps along our southern border.”  Many Americans found Ocasio-Cortez’s comparison of U.S. detention centers along the southern border to concentration camps very distasteful and inappropriate.  As the backlash mounted, the liberal media rode to the defense of the Bronx Bolshevik with headlines like this from Newsweek:

The Salt Lake City Tribune graced its readers with this headline:

Yes, we do have concentration camps

And not to be outdone, the New York Times went all in with this gem:

The Democrats are so audacious because they can count on the liberal media to spin most any story to their satisfaction.  The southern border is overwhelmed with apprehended immigrants that entered the United States illegally.  These illegal aliens are diverting resources from legal immigration processing.  There is not enough space in existing detention centers to handle the flood of people pouring across the border.  Consequently, overcrowding and less than desirable living conditions exist in these detention centers.  Funding is desperately needed – emergency funding.  

On February 15, 2019 President Trump issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring a National Emergency along the southern border of the United States. The Democrats claim that no emergency exists, even though President Trump informed them of the sharp increases in the number of families entering and seeking entry to the United States and the inability to provide detention space for many of these aliens while their removal proceedings are pending. In response, Speaker of the House Pelosi said in February that the ‘emergency’ was an illusion that Trump wanted to convey.

Today, four months later, House Democrats introduced a 4.5 billion emergency border bill. Pelosi made certain that no funding for border security is in the bill – which makes as much sense as a door without walls.  What is remarkable is on May 1, 2019 President Trump requested 4.5 billion in emergency funding for the border.  Trump sought 3.3 billion for humanitarian assistance and 1.1 billion for border operations.  Trump called out the fact that none of this money would be used for the border wall.  In response to Trump’s 4.5 billion funding request on May 1st, House Appropriations Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) said Democrats would carefully review the request but expressed some initial skepticism.

Trump’s May 1st request was a non-starter in the House of Representatives.  So who is really responsible for today’s conditions on our southern border?  If there is no funding for the southern border, what did the Democrats expect?  If Ocasio-Cortez truly is compassionate about the condition of illegal immigrants along the border, why is she not working towards getting President Trump the funding he needs?   

None of this nonsense is really about children, sleeping conditions, tooth brushes, or toiletries. The democrats only care about one thing – obstructing and disrupting the President of the United States – regardless of the people the hurt along the way.
