Illinois Abortion Law – Nothing to Celebrate

It is difficult to watch and even harder to understand.  How can the passage of laws that allow for abortions at any stage of a pregnancy be reason for smiles, laughter, cheers, high fives, and applause?  The most recent ‘democrat state’ to pass such a liberal abortion law is Illinois.  The Chicago Tribune photograph by Jose M. Osorio shows Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker with a grim from ear to ear.  Senator Melinda Bush on the Governor’s left and Representative Kelly Cassidy on his right are captured with big laughter smiles while applauding themselves for a job well done.  What could possibly be so enjoyable about a woman having an abortion or a partial-birth abortion?  Even if you support this law, it’s nothing to be celebrated.

Did any of the Illinois legislators view pictures or video of a partial birth abortion? How about the New York lawmakers and Governor Andrew Cuomo?  Far from being serious and sober concerning abortion, Cuomo went so far as to order One World Trade Center and other New York landmarks to be lit up in pink – like it’s a statewide baby shower for a special little girl!  It is impossible to understand how any thoughtful adult could approve of a viable infant with only his or her head remaining in the birth canal to be in the hands of an abortionist.

In his press release, Governor Cuomo proclaimed, “The Reproductive Health Act is a historic victory for New Yorkers and for our progressive values.  In the face of a federal government intent on rolling back Roe v. Wade and women’s reproductive rights, I promised that we would enact this critical legislation within the first 30 days of the new session – and we got it done. I am directing that New York’s landmarks be lit in pink to celebrate this achievement and shine a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow.”

Are all these elected officials so jaded by politics, so blind to biology that they do not recognize a baby, an infant when they see one?  Upon signing Reproductive Health Act in Illinois, Governor Pritzker said, “Today we proudly proclaim that in this state, we trust women.  And in Illinois, we guarantee as a fundamental right a woman’s right to choose.”  The fundamental right of a woman who becomes pregnant, to have an abortion, at any time during her pregnancy using any instrument, medicine, drug or any other substance or device to terminate the pregnancy – this is ‘progressive values’.

What is a partial birth abortion?

The ‘pro-choice’ crowd doesn’t like the term ‘partial birth’.  Maybe it’s too close to reality for them.  They prefer to say that it’s a surgical procedure called Intact Dilation and Extraction.  Regardless of what the procedure is called, it is the removal of an intact fetus from the uterus. During the abortion, if the infant’s skull is too large, it is crushed with forceps. Or, the abortionist creates a hole, with scissors or another sharp instrument, in the back of the baby’s head and, using suction, removes the brain from the skull so it more easily collapses.  You don’t have to imagine what this looks like.  Using your favorite search engine, search pictures of partial birth abortions.  See for yourself why the liberal lawmakers are all smiles.

The further along a pregnancy, the more difficult it is to abort a baby – physically, emotionally, and hopefully spiritually.  As red states pass laws that prohibit abortions when a heartbeat is detected, blue states are taking the exact opposite track by allowing abortions even when a viable baby is three-quarters of the way out of the birth canal – only a head length away from being born.  It is shameful that such a division exists in our country.  It is spiritually starved to pretend that during the late stages of a pregnancy, another human being, a baby, is absolutely part of reality.  The baby is real.
