What do Islamic Extremists Believe and Why do They Believe it?

Islamic extremists believe that the world should be governed by their strict interpretation of Islamic law, known as Sharia. They regard only their rigid version of Islam as legitimate and insist it must be applied universally to both Muslim and non-Muslim societies. From their perspective, democracy is rejected as merely “man-made law,” and secular governments are seen as inherently illegitimate. Their goal is to establish a global caliphate under authoritarian religious rule.

Violence is a religious duty

Extremists claim armed jihad is an obligation for all Muslims.

  • They reinterpret jihad exclusively as warfare.
  • They glorify martyrdom and suicide attacks.
  • They believe killing enemies is spiritually rewarded.

Anyone who disagrees is an enemy (Takfir)

They declare other Muslims to be unbelievers if they don’t follow their ideology.

  • This allows them to justify killing Muslims.
  • They see Shi’a, Sufis, and even Sunni Muslims as apostates.
  • They erase centuries of Islamic diversity.

Takfir is the act of declaring another Muslim to be an unbeliever or apostate. This practice is often used by extremists to justify violence against those who do not share their specific interpretations of Islam, including other Muslim groups. By labeling others as non-believers, they claim religious legitimacy for acts such as exclusion, persecution, or even killing.

The West is at war with Islam

They believe there is a global conspiracy to destroy Islam.

  • They frame world events as religious persecution.
  • They use foreign policy grievances to fuel rage.
  • They portray violence as “defense of the faith.”

This narrative is a propaganda tool to recruit followers.

A return to a mythical “pure” early Islam

They believe society must revert to a harsh, literalist imitation of the 7th century.

  • They reject modern culture, education, and freedoms.
  • They enforce brutal punishments
  • They insist upon the oppression of women.
  • They erase historical context.

Why do they believe it?

Islamic extremists hold their beliefs largely due to a combination of ideological, historical, and sociopolitical factors. They interpret religious texts in a rigid and literal way, viewing themselves as defenders of a faith under attack. Many are motivated by a desire to return to what they see as a “pure” form of Islam, believing that modern influences have corrupted society and that only strict adherence to early practices can restore religious integrity. This worldview is reinforced by propaganda that frames global events as attacks on their religion, fueling feelings of victimization and justifying extreme actions as necessary for survival and revival.

Additionally, extremist leaders often exploit grievances related to foreign policy, social inequality, and perceived injustices to recruit followers. By emphasizing a narrative of persecution and promising a sense of purpose and belonging, they attract individuals who may feel marginalized or disillusioned. This approach deliberately ignores the historical diversity and evolution of Islamic law and culture, favoring a simplified and harsh vision that rejects modernity and enforces strict social control.

Identity crisis and alienation

Many recruits feel:

  • Humiliated or marginalized
  • Disconnected from society
  • Searching for belonging and purpose

Extremist groups offer them a powerful identity: You are chosen. You are a warrior. You matter.

Political grievances weaponized as religion

Conflicts, wars, corruption, and authoritarian regimes create anger. Extremists hijack these frustrations and dress them in religious language.  Religion becomes the emotional fuel, not the root cause.

Manipulation by charismatic leaders

Recruiters selectively quote scripture out of context and suppress centuries of scholarship.

Most followers think they are devout. They are not.  They are indoctrinated.

Trauma and revenge psychology

Violence, displacement, war, or personal loss can make individuals vulnerable to radicalization framed as justice.

Hard Facts

Islamic extremism is not mainstream Islam. It is:

  • A political cult using religion
  • A power movement, not a faith movement

Islamic extremists believe they alone represent God’s will, that violence is sacred, and that the modern world must be destroyed to build a theocratic utopia. There are Islamic extremists in the United States. Their goals are no different than the Islamic extremists in the Middle East, Indonesia, Africa, and elsewhere around the world. They want to turn this nation into an Islamic Republic like Iran or worse.

Their treatment of women is barbaric, criminal, and pure evil

Women exist primarily to serve men

Extremists teach that a woman’s only legitimate roles are:

  • Wife
  • Mother
  • Domestic servant
  • Bearer of children for the “Islamic state”

They deny women autonomy, individuality, and intellectual pursuit

Women must be completely controlled

Extremist groups enforce:

  • Male guardianship over every aspect of life
  • Forced dress codes (full covering, face veil mandatory)
  • Prohibition from traveling without male approval
  • Surveillance and punishment for “disobedience”

This isn’t spirituality — it’s authoritarian social control.

Education for women is discouraged or banned

They claim education corrupts women or makes them rebellious.

  • Girls’ schools closed
  • Literacy restricted
  • Professional careers forbidden

Women as property and spoils of war

In groups like ISIS and Boko Haram:

  • Women captured and enslaved
  • Forced marriages
  • Sexual slavery is justified by using distorted scripture
  • Trafficking framed as religiously permitted

These practices directly violate Islamic law and have been condemned by many Muslim scholars worldwide. Yet they continue.

Women blamed for male morality

Extremists argue that women are responsible for:

  • Men’s sexual thoughts
  • Social corruption
  • “Fitna” (temptation / chaos)

Therefore, they isolate and erase women from public life rather than teaching men accountability.

Punishment and violence as discipline

Extremist regimes justify:

  • Beatings
  • Public lashings
  • Stoning
  • Honor killings
  • Execution for minor dress or behavior violations

This cruelty is political intimidation disguised as religion.

Harsh realities

Islamic extremists weaponize religion to dominate women because:

  • Control over women = control over society
  • Patriarchy strengthens authoritarian rule
  • Oppression becomes a loyalty test
  • Fear keeps communities submissive

Islamic extremist groups reduce women to instruments of control rather than recognizing them as individuals with rights and dignity. Under regimes like ISIS, Boko Haram, Al-Shabaab, and Taliban factions, women are confined almost entirely to domestic roles, denied education, barred from public life, and placed under strict male guardianship. Their movement, clothing, speech, and behavior are heavily policed, with harsh punishments for even minor violations. These rules are framed as religious obligations, but they function as tools to enforce obedience and consolidate authoritarian power within the community.

Beyond social restriction, Islamic extremists have systematically exploited women as property and weapons of war. In areas they control, women have been kidnapped, trafficked, forcibly married, and subjected to sexual slavery under distorted religious justifications. Violence against women—public beatings, honor-based killings, and coercion—is used to terrorize entire populations and signal total dominance. This treatment reflects not authentic Islamic teaching, but a deliberate strategy to control society by stripping women of autonomy and using their suffering to maintain fear and submission.

Inclusion and diversity cannot be a firewall for Islamic extremists in the United States. Neither can they be allowed to find cover under the First Amendment. Their brand of Islam is not a religion.

It is an oppressive, violent, sexually deviant, murderous cult.
